Dog rings make up a part of the gearbox of an F1 car, and help it function. Paired with ‘dogs’ - which act as teeth - the two work in unison to help engage the gears. When an F1 driver needs to shift gear, when slowing down or speeding up, the dog rings move and sets of dogs engage with them. Once engaged, it locks the gear. Dog ring gearboxes are predominantly used in racing, as they allow the drivers to shift from gear to gear more swiftly, without the need for a clutch. 

This specific dog ring, now re-engineered into a desk tidy, was used on the Mercedes F1 W05 Hybrid race cars, driven by Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg, during the 2014 FIA Formula One World Championship™. It was a Championship-winning season for both the team and Lewis Hamilton. It was Lewis’ first Title with the Silver Arrows.
